Second Harvest
Longo’s partners with Second Harvest and ReFresh Foods to help reduce food waste in an environmentally and socially responsible way while feeding the need within our communities!
Second Harvest’s mission is to help feed hungry people by picking up and preparing excess fresh food and delivering it daily to social service agencies in Toronto including: shelters, soup kitchens, community centres and after-school programs. 40% of their recipients are children and youth.
ReFresh Food is a program that picks up fresh and perishable foods from local businesses and redistributes them to Halton area food banks in an environmentally friendly way. Their company’s goal is to reduce hunger in Halton as it is estimated that more than 28,000 Halton residents live below the poverty line and one out of every 13 are children.
Our stores participate in the program based on the needs of the community. We donate bread, bakery, frozen meat and seafood surplus products. This is a great opportunity for Longo’s to continue sustaining its Genuine Merchant strategy by supporting the needs of our local communities in addition to complimenting the current and ongoing initiatives of the Longo’s Family Charitable Foundation.
